India Post runs one of the largest postal networks in the world. There are 1,63,176 post offices on the ground, reaching across 36 states and union territories, 739 districts and more than 6,200 talukas, between them covering over 26,000 PIN codes. Very little of the country sits outside the reach of a counter somewhere, and that breadth is what the directory on this page is built to map.

The network is layered into three kinds of office. A little under 800 are head post offices, the routing and accounting hubs for a district. Around 23,800 are sub post offices, the full-service counters you find in towns. The rest, roughly 1.38 lakh or about 85 percent of every office, are branch offices: the small, often single-handed counters that carry post, savings and money orders into villages. That rural base is the real character of India Post, and it is why the office count runs so far ahead of any private courier.

Coverage is densest where the people are. Uttar Pradesh alone accounts for 17,669 offices, ahead of Maharashtra with 12,954, Tamil Nadu with 11,621, and Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh close behind. But some of the busiest postal geographies are not the most populous, since thinly spread desert and hill districts often need more offices, not fewer, to close the distance.
