India Post Offices in Sikkim

Sikkim is one of the country’s smallest states, and its postal map reflects that. India Post runs 213 offices across four districts, covering 44 PIN codes and 14 talukas. The numbers are modest, but in steep Himalayan country a delivery point in a far village counts for a lot more than it would on the plains.

The way the offices break down says a lot about the terrain. One head post office handles the bulk of the heavy mail and money work, 22 sub offices sit in the towns, and 190 branch offices do the day-to-day delivery out in the hills. Branch offices make up roughly nine in ten of the total, which is how the post reaches villages tucked along mountain roads.

East District, home to Gangtok, runs the largest network with 74 offices and is the busiest of the four. South District follows with 50 and West District with 48, while North District, the most thinly settled, holds 41. The spread is fairly even once you account for how few people live in the higher reaches.
