A Brief History of India Post
India's postal history stretches back centuries from foot messengers and pigeon carriers in ancient times to a full organised system under the British East India Company in the 18th century. The real turning point was 1854, when the Indian Post Office Act established a comprehensive, nationwide postal system under government control. That year marks the birth of India Post as we know it today.
Today, India Post operates under the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, and handles billions of articles every year from simple postcards to Speed Post parcels, from bank deposits to passport deliveries.
