Bihar's post office network, district by district
Bihar operates 9,160 post offices across 38 districts, spanning 1,684 PIN codes and 397 talukas, with branch offices forming nearly nine in ten of them.
Bihar’s postal map is built for reach. The state runs 9,160 post offices across 38 districts, and between them they cover 1,684 PIN codes and touch 397 talukas. For a state where a lot of daily business still runs through the post office counter rather than a private courier, that density does real work.
The make-up of these offices tells you who they serve. Bihar has just 32 head post offices and 1,036 sub offices, while branch offices number 8,091, close to 88 percent of the total. That tilt toward branch offices is the highest among the big northern states, and it reflects how much of Bihar lives outside the cities. These small offices are where a farmer collects a money order or a family books a registered letter. With only 32 head offices for 38 districts, the heavier processing is concentrated in a handful of towns, while the branch offices fan out to handle everyday counter work in the surrounding villages.
Office counts are spread fairly evenly across the larger districts rather than piling up in one place. Samastipur leads with 476 post offices, just ahead of Madhubani at 448. Purba Champaran holds 405, Muzaffarpur 401, and Nalanda sits at 394. Saran has 390 and Gaya 384. Even Patna, the capital, has 365, which says something about how the network is weighted toward the rural districts of north Bihar instead of the state’s one big city. The gap between the busiest district and the capital is small, and that flatness is unusual.
For business mail, bulk registered post and dispatch in volume, that wide footprint is the point. A trader in Gaya and an office in Saran can both lodge bulk consignments through their district network without routing everything through Patna. Volume senders who deal with a steady stream of registered articles or business parcels tend to lean on their nearest sub office, and the spread of those across the state keeps that within reach almost everywhere. To find post offices in Bihar near a particular town, start from the district.
